Hello everyone, today we will discuss what is MySQL, data and databases, Database Management System and types of Database Management System and MySQL Workbench.
When you have humongous data around you, you need a database management system to manage the data around you and one of the database management systems is MySQL. So hello everyone, this is Subhendu Dutta, and I welcome you to this introductory session on MySQL.
Now, before I start with MySQL, let me first brief you on what is data and databases.
What is Data & Database?
Suppose a company needs to store the names of hundreds of employees working in the company in such a way that you know, all the employees can be individually identified, then the company collects the data of all these employees, right. So now, when I see data, I mean that the company collects distinct pieces of information about an object. So when the company needs to store the information of all the employees, it collects distinct pieces of information of all the employees so that you know the employees can be identified.
Now, when you have such a large amount of data, you obviously need a place to store it right, you cannot just use so much data without storing it in one place. So the place to store all this data is basically known as a database.
So basically, you know, you can consider the database as a big container wherein you can store all the data. But do you guys think that you can use the data without the proper management of the database? No, right? You cannot use a humongous amount of data without its proper management. So this is where the word database management system comes in.
What is Database Management System:
So database management system is basically a software application that interacts with the users applications, and the database itself to capture and analyze the data. So as you can see we first have the databases and then we have the database management system, handling the data and the databases and that particular system interacts with the various users and the application to capture the data.
So the data stored in the databases can be modified, retrieved and deleted, and can be any of the data types like you know, can be strings, it can be numbers, it can be images, or it can be anything. So that’s what basically a database management system is, it’s basically a software application that interacts with the users.
Now, you know, there are various types of database management systems, such as the hierarchical database management system, the relational database management system to network and the object oriented. So let me just walk you through them one by one.
Hierarchical Database Management System:
So the hierarchical database management system has a style of the predecessor successor type. So basically, it has a structure similar to data for tree wherein the nodes represent the records and the branches of the tree represent the fields.
Relational Database Management System:
The relational database management system uses a structure that allows the users to identify and access the data in relation to another piece of data in the database.
Network Database Management System:
The network database management system supports the many to many relationships where multiple member records can be linked.
Object Oriented Database Management System:
The object oriented database management system can use small individual software called objects. So basically, each object contains a piece of data and instructions for the actions to be done with the data.
So that was the four types of database management systems. Now, out of all these database management systems, the most common DBMS that is basically the acronym for database management system is the our DBMS.
So by our DBMS, I mean, it’s the relational database management system and in the relational database management system itself, the most common one, which is used is MySQL. So now let’s just get into the main topic that is what is MySQL.
What is MySQL:
MySQL is powered by the Oracle Corporation, and is an open source relational database management system that works on many platforms.
- It provides multi user access to support many storage engines and not only these, but it also provides various other features like it provides good connectivity so that you like you can connect with various databases and clients.
- It provides low total cost of ownership.
- It’s very flexible and scalable.
- It also provides various tools such as MySQL Workbench, which is basically a dashboard which enables you to prepare models, perform Server Administration, monitor and configure data, perform data migration and all. It’s also very robust and is very secure.
So it’s basically an open source software that you can use to store your data and perform various actions.
Now that you know what exactly my SQL is, let me just tell you the history behind its name. So MySQL was named as the co-founder Michael Widenius’s daughter’s name was “My” and SQL comes from structured query language. That is equal to MySQL.
